Compare payoffs and time on the same basis

A tournament-winner ticket and a series ticket are claims on different events. The first requires a path through an entire event; the second ends with one match. Neither is automatically the better investment. Compare the title probability, offered price, settlement terms and duration with the alternatives actually available. An attractive long price can still have negative expectation, while a high-margin board can contain an individually attractive quote. Do not infer the value of one team’s ticket from the sum of the board alone.

Measure a complete field

For a mutually exclusive and exhaustive winner market, add every reciprocal quote at the same timestamp. The hypothetical 16-team field below sums to 1.240138433450, giving 24.013843% overround. The balanced-liability hold expression 1−1/S is 19.363841%, not the same percentage. This is not an observed market or an operator comparison. An incomplete field, an “other” option counted twice, or quotes from different times invalidate the simple interpretation. A positive overround does not guarantee profit to the operator when liabilities are unbalanced.

They are not observed true title probabilities.

Proportional, additive and nonlinear margin removal allocate the excess differently. None discovers the true title probability. A negative additive probability in a longshot tail is a warning that the method is unsuitable, not a reason to clip values and quietly treat the rest as truth. Compare reasonable methods as sensitivity analysis. Keep the raw complete board and your model separately. For a specific team at price 21, the break-even title probability is 1/21, about 4.761905%, regardless of the field’s total overround.

Price the path, not just the ranking

Start from the actual tournament rules: entry stage, pairing procedure, series lengths, progression and elimination. Multiply probabilities along a specified path only when later probabilities are conditional on reaching that path. If several opponents or brackets are possible, weight their branches and add them. A product of three unconditional average win rates need not equal a title probability. A simulation can perform the bookkeeping, but more iterations do not fix wrong ratings or an incorrect bracket. The site’s series calculator prices series inputs; it is not a complete tournament simulator.

A constant-probability model illustrates format effects without describing a current event. With map chance p, independent-map Bo3 and Bo5 chances are 3 p²−2 p³ and p³(1+3 q+6 q²), where q=1−p. A hypothetical stage ending at three match wins or three losses has the same latter polynomial in the match probability w. This identity assumes every opponent has the same conditional strength. Real Swiss pairings change opponents by state, so use state-specific transition probabilities rather than advertising a universal elimination rate for favourites.

A rolling stake is a separate strategy

For a hypothetical playoff path, let conditional series chances be 0.70,0.62 and 0.58. The title chance from that point is 0.25172. If future accepted prices were exactly 1.45,1.62 and 1.75, rolling every return would pay 4.11075 times the initial stake on three wins. An outright at 4.00 pays less in that scenario. These future prices are assumptions, not quotes known in advance. A changed opponent or price changes the strategy, and stopping after an early win changes its payoff tree. Compare both strategies from the same decision time.

pTitle=.70*.62*.58=.25172
rollingPrice=1.45*1.62*1.75=4.11075
EVroll=.25172*4.11075-1=.03475799

If assumed qualifying chance=.813:
pTitlePreEvent=.813*.25172=.20464836
EVpreEvent5=.20464836*5-1=.0232418
Different entry stages imply different contracts.
A rollover that stops or resizes needs its own state-payoff calculation.

Reinvesting the full return increases the next stake after a win. It is not the same as recomputing a fractional-Kelly allocation from total available wealth. Three prices with small individual margins can also compound their cost. Under a specific proportional-loading model, the fair-return factors multiply, but a generic board hold cannot be charged to every selected team as if the loading were known. Optional stopping gives flexibility to reconsider, not guaranteed financial dominance. If the next leg is unattractive, keeping the money is a legitimate end to the sequence.

Duration, correlation and an exit price

Capital has an opportunity cost only relative to a feasible alternative. If no other worthwhile position is available, counting twenty hypothetical series bets as foregone profit invents a cost. Use a time-indexed budget showing settled cash, open stakes and peak simultaneous loss. Match duration, withdrawal timing and settlement review all matter to availability. An event may also postpone or change format. The right comparison includes cash that remains unused and the chance of losses, not an assumed stream of identical profitable bets.

A title ticket and a later series ticket on the same team can lose together. Track that common exposure before adding either side. A cash-out offer is an optional transaction when available, not a guaranteed fair exit. For a teaching example, a 50-unit title ticket at 15 pays 750 if it wins. In a two-team final, an actually accepted opponent hedge at 1.60 requires 468.75 to equalise net profit at 231.25. The extra funds and compatible settlement are essential. Whether that hedge improves expected wealth depends on the current probability and price, not on the original long odds.

Keep a dated forecast, complete field, bracket version, probability assumptions, costs, duration estimate and accepted stake for every candidate. Recalculate after confirmed roster or format changes instead of preserving an obsolete title probability. Retain skipped opportunities and unavailable prices to avoid hindsight selection. Report conditional projections as projections; realised ROI and CLV answer different questions. There is no universal outright allocation, Kelly fraction or minimum relative edge that replaces a defensible model. If the price does not compensate for the uncertainty and constraints, a pass is the finished decision.

Simulation precision is not forecast certainty

A tournament simulation has at least two uncertainties: sampling noise from a finite number of runs and uncertainty in the inputs. Increasing the run count reduces the first while leaving the second intact. If a fixed model assigns a 5% title chance,100000 independent runs have a binomial frequency standard error of about 0.068920 percentage points. That is numerical precision under the model, not an error bar for the team’s true chance. A wrong roster, missing patch effect or incorrect pairing rule can dominate the numerical error. Record the seed and iteration count for reproducibility without presenting them as evidence of predictive skill.

This chosen scenario range is not a statistical confidence interval.

When presenting an uncertainty range, state how it was obtained. A chosen low and high scenario is not automatically a 95% confidence interval. An interval that stays positive under a few convenient assumptions is not a guarantee that reality lies inside it. Include scenarios that could invalidate the candidate, such as an unresolved roster or a different bracket path. Preserve the rejected versions instead of narrowing the range after seeing the winner. This makes the next review a test of what the model knew before the event. It also clarifies why a very large displayed EV can justify more investigation rather than a larger stake.

Frequently Asked Questions

#01 Are rolling stakes always better? +

No. Future quotes, conditional opponents, sizing and the option to stop change the comparison.

#02 Does overround guarantee a loss on every ticket? +

No. Board overround does not identify a particular team’s true probability or the margin allocation.

#03 Is duration automatically lost profit? +

Only relative to a feasible alternative; do not invent an unavailable stream of profitable series bets.
